She thinks he's stuffy. He thinks she's spoilt. Then the gloves come off... and so do their clothes!
For six years Violet Sutcliffe has known that Martin St Clair is the wrong man for her best friend. He's stuffy, old before his time, conservative. He drives Violet nuts - and the feeling is entirely mutual. Then, out of nowhere, her friend walks out just weeks before her wedding to Martin, flying to Australia on a mission of self-discovery. Back in London, Violet finds herself feeling sorry for suddenly-single Martin. At least, she tells herself it's pity she feels. Then he comes calling one dark, stormy night and they discover that beneath their mutual dislike there lies a fiery sexual chemistry.
It's crazy and all-consuming - and utterly wrong. Because not only are they chalk and cheese, oil and water, but Martin once belonged to her best friend. A friend Violet is terrified of losing. What future can there be for a relationship with so many strikes against it?
This book is a spin off from my Blaze novel, Hot Island Nights. Both stories can be read in isolation and still make perfect sense, but I hope that together they form a neat little duo.

4.5 stars! In the epilogue of the prequel to this book, Hot Island Nights (Harlequin Blaze), the heroine of that book, Elizabeth, is flabbergasted to see sworn enemies, Violet and Martin (the hero/heroine of this book) getting off of a plane together to visit her in Australia. Her fiance Nathan, seeing her astonishment, says to her "Let's hear their story."
Yes, Nathan, let's! And what a story this is!
Violet is Elizabeth's best friend. Martin was Elizabeth's fiance. The two of them constantly sniped and bickered at each other for the entire six years they've known each other. She called him 'Droopy Drawers' and wondered how he didn't bore people to death. He merely sneered superciliously at her wild clothes and even wilder manner.
When Elizabeth throws Martin over and runs away to Australia both Violet and Martin are left a bit adrift. But at heart they are two decent people who both loved Elizabeth and Violet feels very sorry for Martin. So she buys him a bottle of Peach Schnapps.
Who knew a bottle of Peach Schnapps would set off a torrid love affair between two sworn enemies?
I loved this book! Violet and Martin had crazy chemistry and they quickly figured out that all of that animosity was simple re-directed passion. They had been in complete denial for years that they'd had the hots for each other.
In addition to the great romantic & sexual chemistry there is excellent characterization of both parties. Violet is a wild child because she is hiding an immense amount of pain from being rejected by her family. Martin has painstakingly cultivated his current, precise persona in order to rise above his decidedly lower-class beginnings. Their burgeoning understanding about these parts of each other is what makes the romance in this book so affecting.
And it sweet to see them begin to settle into a deeper relationship and to see Violet attempt to tone herself down a bit in order to help Martin get a coveted membership to an exclusive club, while at the same time it is great to see Martin reclaim some of his inner-tough to defend her honor.
And it was gratifying to know that while Martin wouldn't consider any sexual position except missionary with Elizabeth, he'll do it anyhow, anyway, anytime, with Violet!
I take a half-star off because of Violet's incessant hand-wringing about telling Elizabeth about her and Martin. Although Martin succinctly explains why she keeps putting it off, it still felt a little too much.
But that is a minor quibble. I really enjoyed this book.
Highly recommended!

Her Best Worst Mistake edition by Sarah Mayberry Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
The sequel to Hot Island Nights (can be read as a standalone though) is the story of Martin, jilted lover of Elizabeth and Violet, Elizabeth's best friend. When Elizabeth ran away from her upcoming wedding she left them behind, two people who had barely tolerated each other for her sake but had always had a deep and abiding dislike for each other. Yet this dislike had always come with an awareness of the other that neither would have admitted to - until now.
This story was absolutely fabulous! Showing the fine line between hate and love, the dislike Violet and Martin feel gives way to a sexual chemistry that is off the charts. Sarah Mayberry can write a sex scene like nobody's business! But what makes the love scenes so good is the emotions under the surface, the way they suddenly have to deal with the idea that they have had an attraction to each other for a long time that was always denied. Violet in particular must deal with what she feels is a betrayal of her friendship with Elizabeth. The alternating points of view add depth and realism to the story as the relationship develops. Heartache and longing, a newly minted friendship that develops into a real romantic entanglement are all present in this well written story. Every novel Sarah writes is worth every penny. 5 stars!
Her Best Worst Mistake has one of my favorite tropes! It's where the uptight hero gets shook up by the free-spirited heroine! Violet sets stuffy Martin's pants on fire!
Martin a.k.a. Droopy Drawers shows believable personal growth. His ambition to move up in the world proves more complex than initially presented. Martin is Violet's perfect match. He rocks her world! This hero and heroine have chemistry, and their love scenes were hot, Hot, HOT! (I loved the mango scene.)
At times, I worried the usual plot devices (poor communication, big misunderstandings, pregnancy, self-sacrifice) would be used as obstacles. They were not! Yay! The characters understood each other and worked through their issues, except one major issue that could have blown up in their faces, but it was handled well and stayed true to the characters.
Sarah Mayberry made me care about the characters. Their actions made me laugh, get angry, fan my heated face, cheer, and cry. Her characterizations remind me of Julie James and Susan Elizabeth Phillips with her humor, witty dialogue, and heartwarming storytelling. I needed a book like this after all the dark stuff I've been reading! Please note this book is a sequel, but it can stand alone. This is my first Mayberry book. I'm looking forward to more of her work!

Memorable Quote 1 - Droopy Drawers confronts Violet
There was something about the way he was looking at her that made her feel even more nervous.
"So? I remembered you like the peach schnapps. It's not a big deal."
"Isn't it? I remember that you hate escargot. And that you refuse to see any movie with Kate Beckinsale in it. And that you have every George Michael album ever made."
She blinked. "Why would you remember all of that?
"I don't know. I used to think it was because you annoyed me." He took a step toward her. "I used to think it was because your perfume would get in my clothes and stay with me for days afterward, even though I'd barely brushed up against you."
He took another step toward her and something powerful and undeniable thudded in the pit of her stomach.
"You hate me," she said, staring at him, knowing she should put some distance between them before this became something it shouldn't.
"Do I?"

Memorable Quote 2
"Thank you," she said.
He looked bemused. "For what?"
"For everything. For being amazing in bed and endlessly patient, for sacrificing ... for me and bringing me all the way around the world simply because you were worried about me, even though it meant you were probably going to spend your holidays alone. For the way you always put your hand on the small of my back to guide me across the street and the way you let me be in charge of the television remote control and the way you have never, not once, judged me or mistrusted me or made me feel small or unwanted."
"Violet, sweetheart..." He blinked and she realized that he was close to tears.
Her Martin. Mr. Uptight. Mr. Repressed.
