Lush, a deceptively tranquil, the secluded island basks in splendid isolation off the South Carolina coast--as does the Devereaux mansion, a once-great plantation house now crumbling amidst the ancient oaks. Now, for the first time in two decades, Kevin Devereaux has returned here with his wife and children to visit Kevin's hated, and frightening mother. She said she was ill--but is that really why the old woman has summoned the son she has not seen in so many years? Suddenly, horribly, one of the Devereauxs is going to die. And now, all the dark secrets of this once-proud family will emerge to wrap their evil around the unsuspecting children. Until, in the shadowed corridors and dust-covered rooms of the decaying old house, they learn the true terror of The Unloved.

I found myself rapt and very interested in this novel in the beginning. It then started to bog down a bit toward the middle. It does pick up it's pace again later in the story. It's a good read which focuses more on plot than character development. The two antagonists are the only very well developed characters. The protagonists don't have too much depth. The book is a good example of both dysfunction and not really being able to go home again.
The ending has a nice little twist, though not very plausible. All in all, you'll find an entertaining thriller worth your time.

The Unloved (Audible Audio Edition) John Saul Sandra Burr Brilliance Audio Books Reviews
Typical John Saul, page Turner.
John Saul books never let me down!
Not that great of a story. Halfway through the book, I was wanting to stop reading it. I expected a better book from John Saul.
This was a decent book, but definitely not scary. Though it did keep me intrigued enough to keep reading. And I thought the ending was implausible. But overall I rated this book a three as a good mystery thriller.
Maybe it was just me, but this book left a bad taste in my mouth. I very rarely ever stop reading a book, but after about half way through I gave up on it. I feel guilty about it, though. Maybe someday I'll pick it back up, but who knows...
It just seemed to to take ages to set up a situation and scenario with bland characters that I just could not care for. It was long winded, and just when things would start to get interesting the pace would suddenly shift and you'd be left with a bunch of boring events and descriptions, which most you could see coming for quite some time...
But keep in mind, I was only half way through and that's what this review is based off. Your mileage may very.
Portraits as much like a movie. So indebted it was visualized to the very end. So hard to put down because you might miss something. As I am new to John Saul I shall read more.
I liked this book, but then again, I like most books that John Saul has written. It was somewhat predictable, and the ending was, as is often the case, absurd and kind of like he just wanted to stop writing. This is not uncommon for John Saul, but I must say, this was probably the worst ending, other than the ending in Punish the Sinners. Other than that, I really had a hard time putting it down, and read too late, even though I had to go to work the next day. When I stay up late reading instead of sleeping, I call that a good book. It's certainly not a work of literary genius, but that's not why anyone reads John Saul. They are just fun, engaging, and scary books, and Unloved is no exception.
